Joseph Hemington Harris (Principal until 1839) Fellow of Clare Hall, Cambridge (tradition of gowns at both King’s College and the University of Toronto)

Upper Canada College was formed through the absorption of the Minor College (an association of King's College/ University of Toronto) by the Royal Grammar School. For two full generations, Upper Canada College maintained strong financial and educational ties to the University of Toronto. Since its formation, Upper Canada College has maintained its reputation as one of the most important educational facilities in the country.
The formation of Upper Canada College came after building was ceased for the University of King's College, as instructed by Sir George Murray, and the Colonial Office. Building was ceased because of the large opposition and controversy surrounding King's College due to its religious affiliation with both the Presbyterian Church and the Church of England.
