Born in Jerusalem, Palestine, 11 November 1929 , died Thursday September 17, 2009 in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.  A scholar in the field of medieval Islamic philosophy, Michael served the University of Toronto for over fifty years as a professor (1959-1995), chair and professor emeritus in the Department of Middle East and Islamic Studies, later to be named Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations. He worked closely with the Pontifical Institute at the University.
