The Senior College Encyclopedia was established in 2009 with the goal of presenting in a comprehensive and integrated fashion the historical development and present character of the University of Toronto, in all of its various dimensions, and with a view toward exploring the contribution the University has had in the development of higher education in Canada as a whole. Because of its historical position as the nation’s leading research and graduate institution, the University of Toronto has had a unique role in the fostering of the country’s postsecondary programs, and in the development of the nation’s scholarly infrastructure – from the initiation of academic associations and publications, to the fostering of research programs and networks. It is our hope that this initial exploration of program and institutional development will encourage similar undertakings elsewhere in the country, in a way that will lead ultimately to a full and complete picture of the interconnections of both the unique institutional contributions of individual institutions, and the broader regional and national collaborative developments – that is to say, a comprehensive overview of the Canadian higher education system.

By its nature, a project of this sort is in a constant state of change and growth, as additional material is added and new links and relationships identified. By its nature as well, a project of this sort depends for that growth and development on involvement and contributions from all the members of its various communities. Visitors to the encyclopedia are invited to explore its contents (either through a particular topic inquiry using the Search Box to the right; or through a broader examination of the range of topics included in the encyclopedia, though the A-Z Index (below). We invite readers to consider contributing "overview" articles of approximately 250 -500 words or so on topics of which they have personal knowledge, or for which they have original material relevant to the history or present status of academic life at the University of Toronto. Instructions for such contributions are indicated below. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please send an email to sce.college@utoronto.ca

Getting started

We invite College Fellows and others to contribute "overview" articles of approximately 250 -500 words or so on topics they have personal knowledge of or for which they have original material relevant to the history or present status of academic life at the University of Toronto. This wiki does not currently support anonymous editing so we ask contributors to send their material by email to the editor at <sce.college@utoronto.ca>. Your submissions will be converted to the format required by our software so please do not bother with fancy page layouts, headings, footers and the like. The simpler and cleaner the files you send us, the better! MS Word or other common file formats are acceptable, as are RTF or plain text files. The articles submitted do not have to be "finished" as they can be modified or expanded easily. The following samples suggest the kind of overview pieces we are looking for:

You might also like to browse the existing entries to see if there is something you could add to. The A-Z index provides an easy way to do this. If you know what you are looking for you can also use the search box on the left side of the screen. (If you don't see the navigation bar on the left, scroll down as some browsers (Chrome and Safari) move it to the bottom of the page.)

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please send an email to sce.college@utoronto.ca
