MacGillvray was a graduate in History and English who had taken his M.A. in 1928. His Ph.D. was from Harvard and his contribution to Studies in English by Members of University College Toronto "The Pantisocracy Scheme and its Immediate Background" was based on his dissertation. He was appointed a University College lecturer in 1930.
