Hart House Theatre
Hart House Theatre, sometimes referred to as the cradle of Canadian Theatre, opened in November 1919. Construction of the Theatre was supported by the Massey Foundation, which also financed the construction of Hart House Student Centre at the University of Toronto. This Art Deco theatre was one of the leaders of the 1920s Canadian “Little Theatre” movement. With the direction of Robert Gill, the theatre has produced many well-known actors, playwrights, designers and directors such as William Hutt, Donald Sutherland, Normal Jewison, Raymond Massey, Merrill Denison, who all started their professional career at the Hart House Theatre. In the 1960s, the Hart House Theatre joined the Graduate Centre for Study of Drama. Currently, it is the primary teaching theatre for University of Toronto students. The current Artistic Director of the Theatre is Jeremy Hutton. BJ
