Hart House Debating Club

The Hart House Debating Club is one of the world’s most prestigious debating organizations. It was known as the University of Toronto Debating Union from its inception in the 1940s until 1986, when it secured support from the Hart House Debates Committee and changed its name to Hart House Debating Club. It is the only debating club at the University of Toronto that admits students from all three campuses and all the colleges. The current president of the Club is Steven Penner.

The Hart House Debating Club has hosted debates involving many world leaders such as John F. Kennedy and several foreign ambassadors. The Club hosts many well-known tournaments such as the World Universities Debating Championship and the North American Debating Championship. The Hart House Debating Club won the World Universities Debating Championship in 1981 and 2006. BJ
