Gordon taught at the University of New Brunswick. In 1913 he was appointed to the staff in English at the University of Alberta. In 1918, Gordon spent a year at the University of Toronto taking two graduate courses in history, teaching at University College as a fellow (he was the first teaching assistant), and writing his thesis. He passed both written and oral examinations in May and returned to the University of Alberta where he taught until 1949. He was the first student to be awarded a Ph.D. in English at the University of Toronto.
