Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences
Named after John Charles Fields, a professor of Mathematics at the university, the institute was established in 1992 and initially located at the University of Waterloo. Its new home on College Street was completed in 1995 and has become part of the new complex formed with the completion of the Bahen Centre for Information Technology. The institute promotes research in pure and applied mathematics, statistics and computer science, as well as collaboration between mathematicians and those applying mathematics in areas such as engineering, the physical and biological sciences, medicine, economics and finance, telecommunications and information systems. Office space is provided for as many as 66 visitors.
