Graduate of Corpus Christi College, Oxfoird, with two degrees: Modern Languages (French); and Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.

Served in RAF during WWII; after which he married Rebecca (d. 2007)

Taught Political Philosophy at Oxford University, the University of East Africa, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and the University of Toronto.
