Educated in France and Germany; PhD Göttingen University 1862; LLD Queen’s 1867.
Served in the French army in a campaign in Algiers, became a civil engineer
Appointed to University of London as a mineralogist
Appointed to new University College Chair in Minerology and Geology (1853-1889); then joined School of Practical Science (retiring in 1895 and returning to England)
