William James Ashley was appointed as the first professor of Political Economy and Constitutional History in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Toronto in 1888. His appointment marks the roots of the Bachelor of Commerce degree at the university.

Ashley left Toronto in 1892 and went to Harvard University before returning to England for good. After he returned to the University of Birmingham, he founded the School of Commerce and began the program that lead to the first Bachelor of Commerce degree.
