Amyot graduated from the Fculty of Medicine in 1891, and in 1900 was appointed Director of the Ontario Provincial Board of Health, a position which he held until 1919, at which point he was the first Deputy Minister of the federal Department of Health, instituted in that year. In 1928, he was appointed Deputy Minister of the newly amalgamated federal Department of Pensions and National Health.&nbsp;During his government service, he was noted in particular for his work in institution the filtration and clorination of water, and the pasturization of milk.&nbsp;He was responsible, at the University of Toronto, for the establishment of the first post-graduate program in public health in Canada, and for&nbsp;developing the first diptheria antitoxin in the country.
