Established by Roman Catholic bishop Armand de Charbonnel and the Basilian Fathers on 15 September 1852, at 67 Queen Street East, opposite the site of the current Metropolitan Church. Amalgamated six months later with St Michael's College, a boys' school established simultaneously in September 1852, in the episcopal palace, under the direction of te Brothers of the Christian Schools. The united enterprise continued to operate in the palace, staffed by the Brasilian Fathers.
